On our trip to the Pathfinder Academy in Kitale, Kenya – Darryl “D.M.C” McDaniels changed the entire mood of this class when he performed one of his rhymes and enlisted the help of the students. We’ve never smiled wider than this moment.
The Pathfinder Academy is home to more than 400 students. Founded in 1995, CGP runs the Pathfinder Academy, a primary school of grades 1-8 with 360 students, mainly orphans and vulnerable children. The school’s large gardens raise food to feed the students. The students are trained in biointensive agriculture methods and then provide outreach into the neighboring communities to teach families biointensive methods. In particular, the students work with AIDS widows, assisting them to develop gardens to grow nutritious foods as a step towards being more independent and better nourished. Since its founding, CGP has trained 37,600 farmers in biointensive farming methods; planted 1.1 million trees and supported the establishment of over 350 community tree nurseries; and rehabilitated 40 acres of degraded land.
